Cut a Custom Shape from a Photo in Photoshop – make transparent overlays for video and other uses.
Prompted by a viewer question, learn how to take a custom shape in Photoshop and use it to make a cutout from your image. You will learn how to add a shape to a mask and move it into position to make a cutout of this shape from the image.
This looks like it should be a simple process but typically the custom shape tool is used to create a shape filled with the image – so the surrounds are removed, here we want to keep the surrounding portion of the image and just remove the shape – just a little trickier to do.
The resulting image can be used as a video overlay – make the cutout big and you can view a movie through it. It can also be used as an overlay for a photo or for a Lightroom frame.

I am really in love with you lady! I've been worrying about this for a long time and getting frustrated. You are a life saver!
I thought this was would be so simple but after hours of trying I gave up. Your tutorial made me feel like a fool (but in a good way). Thank you so much. Problem solved in less than a few minutes. Life saver!
I've created a layer mask but it creates a new layer every time. I don't know how to fix it.
I'm guessing this is different now. I've been trying to do do this and all it seems to do is give a slightly grey version of the image in the transparent space. In photoshop it appears transparent, but when exported ad a PNG it has this greyscale faded nature to it. No idea what it is.
Hello Helen, Great video! How would you go about adding a border/stroke to that arrow? Thanks!
thank you my lady you did a great work
Thank you!
thank you for this!!! it was great – I've used it more than once
I just can’t get this to work, when I add my shape nothing happens 😔 is there any way I can fix this?
Out of all the tutorials i found in youtube, this one is really the best
After we creted the layer mask and change the size and position of the shape in transform tab inside the layer mask it does nothing. Is there any solution for this?
hello i have a question! i already made a layer mask but whenever i create my custom shape it makes a new layer and not in the layer mask of my background, do you know what i may be doing wrong?
I am struggling so much with this, used to have an old version of PS and I could do this in so many ways. But since I got the latest version it just isn't working anymore. I used to be able to do the cut out, shapes like this tutorial and all sorts, but now?? It defaults to a white background – what am I doing wrong???
Thanks for the clear tutorial! This is exactly what I was looking for. Now I just have to figure out how to do it with a .svg file instead of a custom shape and in Photopea.
i've been struggling to do this for an HOUR and you just solved all my problems! thank you!
Thank you!
How do you duplicate the mask to have multiple of the same shape in the image?
Awesome tutorial!! Thank you ma'am!
Amazing tutorial! Helped me a lot, thank you so much.
You have no idea how long I looked on the internet to do something so simple! TY
so simple and easy! thank you!
helps me a lot. Ty 🙂
Hi Helen. I hope you never get rid of this video tutorial, because I referred back to it AGAIN, even after 2 years. For me and what I do, it's priceless! Thanks again for all you do.
How would you cut an image transparently from an image that you have placed yourself. say a photo of apple icon, could you make the apple transparent over a fill layer? thank you for your video
Is it possible to use the same process using another image and not a custom shape?
Thank you very much for this video, this helped me lot for my work
Great tutorial, Sub +1 – If I didn't want to mask a transparent shape over a picture, but just add a shape with a transparent background in PS, when I add any shape, the background is white. Thanks
Hello Helen, I have used your technique to leave a transparent heart shape to use for later (all following your method and saving .PNG). How? My aim is to produce a title scene like the red background and cut away in ONLY IN JAPAN YouTube's channel (please take a quick look).
So, in Premiere Pro as a title scene. The video clip would be on a layer underneath and I would put a video effect on the top layer zooming out and project the video layer underneath from which I could then later get rid of the toop layer and play the video as normal. The problem is this, when I import the PNG, the transparent area appears as black. Ok, I haven''t rendered the video yet, but the transparent area it is black so I am not sure if it will be transparent or black in the rendered video
Thank you for any help in regard to this.
Thank you, that was a good tutorial. Especially how to alt (or) option click on the mask and make it editible. 🙂
Had to refer back to this today! I'm so grateful you did this tutorial. I have a feeling this isn't the last time I'll be reviewing it for future projects. You're the best!
Learn how to cut a custom shape out of an image in #Photoshop to create a transparent overlay that can be used, for example, as a video overlay with the video playing through the shape.
Oh hey, is there a similar process for creating the transparency for text instead of a shape? It seems all the tutorials out there show you how to fill text with an image, but not cut text out of an image so the text is transparent when rendering as a png.
And there it is!!! You really saved my bacon with this technique. Sharing this all around, and thanks so much for your help with this particular problem I had. Andrea
